League of Legends Item Guide

Latest posts by Jesus Cruz (see all)

The Items are the most important part of every League’s Match. The players get Gold from killing Minions and Champions only to spend it in the shop, and the items give them many advantages. That’s why, as a player, you have to select your items carefully, or else your Champion will not work properly.

As a player, you have to choose your items wisely. Some items have active effects, others don’t, but the most important part is that the items have to suit your Champion. The decision doesn’t end there, as all the items have to have synergy between each other and your Champion.

The items have tiers depending on their functionality on the match:

  • The Starter items are the most basic ones and are perfect to start the match as they mostly give sustain. Some of them work to create better items, but most of them have to be sold afterward.
  • The Basic items only give a certain stat and work to create better items.
  • The Epic items give a certain stat and have a passive or active effect. All of them work to create Legendary items.
  • The Legendary items are the second-highest tier as they are the ones that give great stats and effects. If you have a proper build, you’ll have four of these, so be sure that they work with each other and with the Mythic.
  • The Mythic items are the best items in the game. They are like the Legendary ones but with some special passives. You can only have one of these per match, so be careful choosing it.
  • Aside from those items, and unless you use Cassiopeia, you’ll also need to buy Boots. The Boots will give you the needed Movement Speed and also some other stats to protect your Champion in the Early/Mid Game.
  • But the list doesn’t end, as we have Consumables; items that you can use once (with one exception that we will see later), and Trinkets, which is a special slot in your inventory reserved for vision items.

Now that we have seen all the item types, it’s time to briefly talk about all the available items in the game and what you can do with them. Let’s go!

Trinkets

The first thing you must buy in the store as soon as the match starts is a Ward. You have three options; the Stealth Ward, the Farsight Alteration, or the Oracle Lens. These items don’t cost Gold, and you’ll only have the Stealth Ward and the Oracle Lens available until Level 9; then, you’ll be able to use the Farsight Alteration.

Stealth Ward

Image from Fandom

The Stealth Ward has an active named Trinket. This will consume one Ward charge to place a Stealth Ward in a place, which will reveal the surroundings of an area of 600 range units. The Stealth Ward will last 90 to 120 seconds (depending on the average level of all the Champions in the match).

The Stealth Ward has two charges, and every charge takes from 240 to 120 (again, depending on the average level of all the Champions in the match) to recharge.

Oracle Lens

Oracle Lens
Image from Fandom

The Oracle Lens will set a drone that will follow the user for 10 seconds and reveal all the hidden or stealthed objects in a 750 units range.

It has 90 to 60 seconds (based on all Champions’ average level) of cooldown and only has a charge.

Farsight Alteration

Image from Fandom

The Farsight Alteration reveals (so it will show all the hidden objects but not stealthed Champions like Teemo when hidden) an area of 4000 range units for 2 seconds, then it will work as a vision object, like the Stealth Ward. Still, this one will last until an enemy breaks it, and it won’t hide. Also, it can’t be used as a Teleport point, and breaking one of them will grant the user 15 Gold and 15 Experience points.

It has 198 to 99 (based on all Champions’ average levels) cooldown seconds.

The Trinkets aren’t the first thing you have to buy as soon as you get out of the base. You’ll also need a Starter item and a Consumable (if necessary).

Consumables

The Consumables are objects that you can use once in a match, and if you want to use them another time, you’ll need to buy them again.

Control Ward

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 75 G.
  • Saleable For: 30 G.

The Control Ward works like the Oracle Lens as it will reveal all the hidden objects in an area of 600 Range units, but instead of following the user, they have to place it. It will last indefinitely, and the user can have up to 2 of them in the inventory.

Health Potion

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 50 G.
  • Saleable For: 20 G.

The user can have up to 5 potions in their inventory, and each one will heal them 5 HP every 0.5 seconds, restoring 150 HP in 15 seconds.

The user can’t use them when full HP, but they can use multiple of them simultaneously. Nonetheless, their effect won’t stack, instead, their effect will queue.

Refillable Potion

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 150 G.
  • Saleable For: 60 G.

As the user buys this item, they will receive two charges of it; each one will heal 5.21 HP every 0.5 seconds, healing 125 HP for 12 seconds.  After using the charges, the user will have to get to the shop to refill them.

Corrupting Potion

  • Cost: 500 G.
  • Saleable For: 200 G.
  • Recipe: Refillable Potion + 350 G.

The Corrupting Potion is a great option for Champions that need to be in their Lane for a long time (like Top Laners) as this potion has three charges; each one will heal the user a total of 125 HP and 75 Mana over 12 seconds.

That’s not all, as they are a great option for melee Champions because, during the 12 regenerating seconds, the basic attacks and abilities will burn the target, dealing 15 of Magic Damage over 3 seconds (the effect is halved for AoE and damage-over-time effects).

Elixir of Iron

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 500 G.
  • Saleable For: 200 G.

Now we will check the three Elixirs available in the game; they are important as they can be used for you to come back in a match. These can only be bought after reaching Level 9, and you can only drink one at a time. The Elixir of Iron grants the user 300 Bonus HP, 25% of Tenacity, and 15% of increased size for 180 seconds. Also, if the user uses it and then move, they will leave a path that grants their allies a 15% bonus Movement Speed.

This Elixir is perfect for Tanks and Champions that have to be in the frontline when the Team Fight phase comes into the match.

Elixir of Sorcery

  • Cost: 500 G.
  • Saleable For: 200 G.

This Elixir grants the user 50 AP points and 15 Mana Regeneration for 180 seconds. Also, every Champion or turret affected by their abilities or basic attacks will receive 25 of True Damage (5 cooldown seconds for each enemy champion).

This Elixir is perfect for the Magicians and Full-AP builds like Veigar, Diana, Orianna, etc.

Elixir of Wrath

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 500 G.
  • Saleable For: 200 G.

This Elixir grants 30 bonus AD and 15% of Vampirism against Champions for 180 seconds. Vampirism means that you’ll get healed by damaging other Champs.

This one is great for Brawlers and Assassins that need sustain in the Late Game.

Starter Items

These items will help you a lot in the Early Game. Some of them will give you sustain; others will grant you Gold and damage.

Cull

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 450 G.
  • Saleable For: 180 G.
  • Stats: +7 AD / +3 Health on hit.

(Side Note, The on-hit effect means that it’ll get activated whenever you land a Basic Attack).

The Cull is a great item for ADCs as it grants the user 1 Gold for every killed Minion, up to 100 Gold. After killing 100 minions, Cull will give the user an extra 350 Gold and then completely deactivate. It’s great for ADCs because they need to get as much Gold as possible as the ADC items are expensive. Also, the ADCs need to get higher AD in the matches quickly or won’t do their job.

Dark Seal

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 350 G.
  • Saleable For: 140 G.
  • Stats: +15 AP / +40 HP.

The Dark Seal has a stack system named Glory, which will give the user two stacks per Champion kill and 1 per assist, up to 10 stacks.  Every Glory stack will give the user 4 AP points. Great item for Magicians in the Mid Lane.

Doran’s Blade

  • Cost: 450 G.
  • Saleable For: 180 G.
  • Stats: +8 AD / +80 HP.

This item’s only passive gives the user a 2.5% of Omnivampirism. The Omnivamp heals you depending on a percentage of AD, AP, and True Damage dealt. For example, if you deal 40 AD, AP, or True Damage with Doran’s Blade, you’ll receive a 1 HP heal.

Doran’s Ring

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 400 G.
  • Saleable For: 160 G.
  • Stats: +15 AP / +70 HP.

This ring will make the user deal 5 AD on-hit damage against Minions and restore 1.25 of their mana over 10 seconds when they damage a Champion. If the user can’t get mana or their mana bar is full, it will heal they 50% of those values—a great item for those Champions that needs mana-sustain stats.

Doran’s Shield

  • Cost: 450 G.
  • Saleable For: 180 G.
  • Stats: +80 HP / 6 HP Regeneration per 5 seconds.

With the shield, the user will deal five bonus AD to the minions like the Doran’s Ring. Also, they will get 0 to 40 (based on your current missing health, being the limit the 75% of their missing health) HP over 8 seconds after being hit by a Champion or an Epic Monster.

(Side Note, this item doesn’t work for Ranged Champions as they will only get a 66% of the effects of this item).

Tear of the Goddess

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 400 G.
  • Saleable For: 280 G.
  • Stats: +240 Mana.

This item is perfect for getting mana sustain while not being a Magician, as it works with charges. This item has 4 charges, and they reload every 8 seconds. Therefore, hitting an enemy Minion or supporting an ally will consume a charge, giving the user 3 mana points and 6 if you do the same with Champions. Nonetheless, this has a limit of 360 mana points.

Like Doran’s Shield and Ring, this object will deal 5 Bonus AD to the Minions.

Basic Support Items

Image from Fandom

The following items can only be bought by Supports. These can have two passives to help with the Gold gaining as Supports can’t farm in the Early Game. These objects are strictly necessary for a Support, or they will fall behind in the match.

As I said, these objects can have one of these two passives:

  • Spoil of War: The objects with this passive will have up to 3 charges that will reload every 35 seconds. So, basic attacks to Minions under 50% (30% for Ranged Champions) of their maximum HP will get them executed. In addition, the user and the nearest ally will get the respective Gold given by the Minion.
  • Tribute: This one also works with 3 charges that will reload every 10 seconds. Every time the user lands a basic attack or a damage ability to a champion or a turret, a charge will be consumed, giving the user 20 Gold.

And these items can change into better items that can fit into the Epic Items tier after gaining 500 Gold with them. This passive is named Quest. When one of these items gets upgraded, they will get a new active alongside the passive, named Warding.

  • Warding: This item has 3 charges; consuming one will let the user place a Stealth Ward wherever they want. The charges will refill when getting to the shop.

These upgraded items can upgrade one more time, keeping the Warding active and giving the user better stats. These enhanced items fit into the Legendary Item tier.

Nonetheless, these items limit the amount of Gold received if the user starts killing many Minions.

  • Before the fifth match minute, if the user farms more than 10 CS per 5 minutes, they will get a Gold reduction of 80%.
  • After the fifth match minute, if the user farms more than 20 CS per 5 minutes, they will get a 50% to 80% (based on their amount of CS) Gold reduction.

Let’s see the items and what they can give to you.

Relic Shield

  • Cost: 400 G.
  • Saleable For: 160 G.
  • Passive: Spoils of War.
  • Stats: +5 AP / +30 HP / +25% of HP Regeneration / +2 Gold every 10 seconds.

Completing the Quest will change this item into the Targon’s Buckler and then into the Bulwark of the Mountain.

Targon Buckler

  • Stats: +10 AP / +100 HP / +50% of HP Regeneration / +3 Gold every 10 seconds.

Bulwark of the Mountain

  • Stats: +20 AP / +250 HP / +100% of HP Regeneration / +3 Gold every 10 seconds.

This item is great for those Supports who prefer helping their ADC instead of playing offensively. This one is perfect for tanky Supports with loads of CC that are usually in the front line.

Spectral Sickle

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 400 G.
  • Saleable For: 160 G.
  • Passive: Tribute.
  • Stats: +5 AD / +10 HP / +25% of Mana Regeneration / +2 Gold every 10 seconds.

Completing the Quest will change this item into the Harrowing Crescent and then into the Black Mist Scythe.

Harrowing Crescent

  • Stats: +10 AD / +60 HP / +50% of Mana Regeneration / +3 Gold every 10 seconds.

Black Mist Scythe

  • Stats: +20 AD / +75 HP / +100% of Mana Regeneration / +3 Gold every 10 seconds.

This item is preferred for those who like to harass the opposite team, and play offensively. A great example of a user of this item is Pyke.

Spellthief’s Edge

  • Cost: 400 G.
  • Saleable For: 160 G.
  • Passive: Tribute.
  • Stats: +8 AP / +10 HP / +50% of Mana Regeneration / +2 Gold every 10 seconds.

Completing the Quest will change this item into the Frostfang and then into the Shard of True Ice.

Frostfang

  • Stats: +15 AP / +70 HP / +75% of Mana Regeneration / +3 Gold every 10 seconds.

Black Mist Scythe

  • Stats: +40 AP / +75 HP / +100% of Mana Regeneration / +3 Gold every 10 seconds.

This item works exactly like the Spectral Sickle but for AP users, like Brand, Vel’Koz, Swain, etc.

Steel Shoulderguards

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 400 G.
  • Saleable For: 160 G.
  • Passive: Spoils of War.
  • Stats: +3 AD / +30 HP / +25% of HP Regeneration / +2 Gold every 10 seconds.

Completing the Quest will change this item into the Runesteel Spaulders and then into the Pauldrons of Whiterock.

Runesteel Spaulders

  • Stats: +6 AD / +100 HP / +50% of HP Regeneration / +3 Gold every 10 seconds.

Pauldrons of Whiterock

  • Stats: +15 AD / +250 HP / +100% of HP Regeneration / +3 Gold every 10 seconds.

This item and the Relic Shield are slightly different because this is more for those bulky Champions that just work as hit-absorbers and don’t need as much sustain as the Relic Shield users need.

Jungler Starter Items; Hailblade and Emberknife

Image from Fandom

The last two items are strictly necessary for the Junglers: the Emberknife and the Hailblade.  They do the same, but the Emberknife leads the user to have the Challenging Smite while the Hailblade lets them have the Chilling Smite.

These items give the user +8 of Omnivampirism against Jungle and Epic Monsters and have three passives: Sear, Recoup, and Huntsman.

  • Sear: Damaging Monsters will burn them for 5 seconds, dealing 60 (+30% of user’s AP, 5% of AD, and 2% of Bonus HP) of Magic Damage.
  • Recoup: If the user is on the river or in the jungle, they will get a mana regeneration equal to 8 to 18 (Based on your level) per second.
  • Huntsman: Killing Epic Monsters will give the user an extra 60 Experience Points, while the first one will give them an additional 150 Exp. Points, and also it will give them another 50 Exp. Points if the user is below the average level of the match’s players.

We talked about all the first items you are buying in your match, and now we have to head onto the Basic items, the ones that will work as a base to build the Epic and Legendary items.

I’m not stopping much on these items as they don’t have passives and only work to give a certain stat.

We saw all the Legendary items, but their usage will depend on a base item that will structure your build, the Mythic items. These are like the Legendary ones but with better stats and some exclusive passives that enhance the power of the Legendary items, but you can only buy one per match, so you have to make a wise decision.

Mythic Items

  • Saleable For: 2170 G.
  • Recipe: Serrated Dirk + Long Sword + Vampiric Scepter + 750 G.

This is another item for Assassins, but I always recommend this one for those Champs that constantly use combos to get into a duel (like Kha’Zix or Rengar) and need some extra armor penetration to secure more damage against Tanks.

And the combo is important as if the user lands two different abilities or attacks on an enemy Champion, the item will deal extra damage based on the target’s maximum HP, giving the user extra Movement Speed. Lastly, this item’s mythic passive grants the rest of the items 4% Armor Penetration.

This item is for Supports that don’t have many CC tools to help the ADC. It has an active that unleash a cone of ice shards, dealing magic damage and slowing them for a second. If the target is in the middle of the ice cone, it’ll get rooted for the same time.

This item’s mythic passive gives the other items 10 AP.

Hextech Rocketbelt

  • Cost: 3200 G.
  • Saleable For: 2240 G.
  • Recipe: Hextech Alternator + Amplifying Tome + Blasting Wand + 865 G.
  • Stats: +90 AP / +15 Ability Haste / +250 HP / +6 Magic Penetration.

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 3400 G.
  • Saleable For: 2380 G.
  • Recipe: Noonquiver + Cloak of Agility + Vampiric Scepter +600 G.
  • Stats: +50 AD / +20% Attack Speed / +20% Critical Strike Chance / +10% Life Steal.

This item gives the user a shield when they get below 30% of their maximum HP, and it’s the most common mythic item for the ADCs as it grants a lot of sustain for the Late Game because of the shield.

Also, this item’s mythic passive gives the other items 5 AD and 50 HP, which is great for ADCs to handle more in the battleground.

Imperial Mandate

This item grants the other Legendary items 15 AP with its mythic passive.

Kraken Slayer

  • Cost: 3400 G.
  • Saleable For: 2380 G.
  • Recipe: Noonquiver + Cloak of Agility + Pickaxe + 625 G.
  • Stats: +65 AD / +25% Attack Speed / +20% Critical Strike Chance.

Another mythic item for ADCs. This one is simple; the user will deal extra True Damage every third basic attack—also, its mythic passive grants the other Legendary items 10% of Attack Speed.

Liandry’s Anguish

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 3200 G.
  • Saleable For: 2240 G.
  • Recipe: Lost Chapter + Fiendish Codex + 1000 G.
  • Stats: +80 AP / +20 Ability Haste / +600 Mana.

The Magician Mid and Top Laners usually use this item because of the burning damage it causes (the more AP the user has, the more damage this item deals) and the mana it grants. Also, it’s great for Champs like Lux as its mythic passive grants 5 Ability Haste to the other Legendary items.

Locket of the Iron Solari

  • Cost: 2500 G.
  • Saleable For: 1750 G.
  • Recipe: Kindlegem + Aegis of the Legion + 300 G.
  • Stats: +20 Ability Haste / +200 HP / +30 Armor / +30 Magic Resistance.

With an active effect that lets the user give shields to an ally and a passive named Consecrate that grants allies with 5 Armor and Magic Resistance, it’s clear that this item is for Supports that are constantly healing and protecting their allies.

Also, this item’s mythic passive works quite differently; it grants 2 extra Resistance units to Consecrate, so if you have five legendary items, Consecrate will grant 15 Armor and Magic Resistance instead of the 5 it usually gives to the allies.

Luden’s Tempest

  • Cost: 3200 G.
  • Saleable For: 2240 G.
  • Recipe: Lost Chapter + Blasting Wand + 1050 G.
  • Stats: +80 AP / +20 Ability Haste / +600 Mana / +6 Magic Penetration.

With this item, the user will deal extra magic damage to the first enemy hit (and nearby ones, if there’s any of them) by their abilities. Also, this item’s mythic passive gives the other items 5 Magic Penetration.

Moonstone Renewer

  • Cost: 2500 G.
  • Saleable For: 1750 G.
  • Recipe: Kindlegem + Bandleglass Mirror + 750 G.
  • Stats: +40 AP / +20 Ability Haste / +200 HP / +100% Mana Regeneration.

Another item for healer Supports. This one will heal the user’s nearby allies every time the user lands an ability or a basic attack. This item’s Mythic passive works like Locket of the Iron Solari’s one as it enhances the healings from this item for every Legendary item the user has.

Night Harvester

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 3200 G.
  • Saleable For: 2240 G.
  • Recipe: Hextech Alternator + Amplifying Tome + Blasting Wand + 865 G.
  • Stats: +90 AP / +15 Ability Haste / +300 HP.

This one is for AP Assassins, like Diana. It will deal more magic damage for every ability or basic attack landed on an enemy Champion—also, this item’s mythic passive grants the other items 5 Ability Haste.

Prowler’s Claw

  • Cost: 3100 G.
  • Saleable For: 2170 G.
  • Recipe: Serrated Dirk + Caulfield’s Warhammer + 900 G.
  • Stats: +60 AD / +20 Ability Haste / +18 Lethality.

Probably, the least favorite item for Assassins, even when its mythical passive gives the other Legendary items 5 Lethality.

This item gives the user a dash that will deal extra damage and increase the user’s damage dealt to the enemies affected by the dash, but the damage isn’t high, and the dash is short, so it’s not so useful.

Riftmaker

  • Cost: 3200 G.
  • Saleable For: 2240 G.
  • Recipe: Leeching Leer + Blasting Wand + 1050 G.
  • Stats: +80 AP / +15 Ability Haste / +300 HP / +8% Omnivampirism.

The preferred item for AP Tanks that love to deal lots of damage. A common use of this item is Mordekaiser because for each second in combat against enemy champions, this item will deal an extra 3% of bonus damage, and it gets up to 9%. When the item is fully stacked, it will change the bonus damage into True Damage.

Also, this item’s mythic passive grants the other Legendary items 2% Omnivampirism and 8 AP.

Shurelya’s Battlesong

  • Cost: 2500 G.
  • Saleable For: 1750 G.
  • Recipe: Kindlegem + Bandleglass Mirror + 750 G.
  • Stats: +40 AP / +20 Ability Haste / +200 HP / +100% Mana Regeneration.

This item has an active effect that will motivate all the allies around the user, giving them 30% of Movement Speed for 4 seconds. Also, if you heal, shield, or buff an ally, this item will give the user and their buffed ally 25% Movement Speed for 1.5 seconds. Great users of this item are Soraka and Sona.

Lastly, this item’s mythic passive will give the other items 5 Ability Haste.

Stridebreaker

Image from Fandom
  • Cost: 3300 G.
  • Saleable For: 2310 G.
  • Recipe: Ironspike Whip + Hearthbound Axe + Kindlegem + 400 G.
  • Stats: +50 AD / +20 Ability Haste / +20% Attack Speed / +300 HP.

This one is perfect for Jungler Brawlers and Top Laners because of its active effect, a whip (provided by Ironspike Whip) that inflicts a lot of AD and slows the enemies for 3 seconds—also, dealing physical damage grants the user 20% of Movement Speed for 2 seconds.

Resuming, this one is an item for Brawlers to secure kills, and we can confirm that because of its mythic passive, that gives the other Legendary items 2% Movement Speed.

Sunfire Aegis

  • Cost: 3200 G.
  • Saleable For: 2240 G.
  • Recipe: Bami’s Cinder + Aegis of the Legion + 700 G.
  • Stats: +20 Ability Haste / +350 HP / +35 Armor / +35 Magic Resistance.

This item is the most used by Tanks because of its passives that give damage to them even when they are not using AD scales.  It has the Bami’s Cinder’s passive plus another one that will make the user’s basic attacks explode around them, applying the same damage the Immolate passive does but for 3 seconds.

Lastly, its mythic passive gives the other Legendary items 5% of Tenacity and Slow Resist, and 50 HP.

Trinity Force

  • Cost: 3333 G.
  • Saleable For: 2333.1 G.
  • Recipe: Sheen + Hearthbound Axe + Kindlegem + 833 G.
  • Stats: +35 AD / +20 Ability Haste / +30% Attack Speed / +300 HP.

Another great item for Brawlers that wants extra damage for dueling. It has the Sheen’s passive and another one that will give the user extra AD for every basic attack, up to 20% with five basic attacks.

Its mythic passive gives the other legendary items 3 AD, 3 Ability Haste, and 3 Movement Speed.

Turbo Chemtank

  • Cost: 2800 G.
  • Saleable For: 1960 G.
  • Recipe: Bami’s Cinder + Null-Magic Mantle + Cloth Armor + 950 G.
  • Stats: +20 Ability Haste / +350 HP / +25 Armor / +25 Magic Resistance.

This item has many users; it’s for those AP-based Champs that benefit a lot from Movement Speed, like Singed.

Moving and taking damage will charge this item. When it’s fully stacked, the user’s next basic attack will deal some magic damage to their target and the nearby enemies, but that’s not the best part of the item because it has an active effect that activates when the user is moving towards an enemy, giving the user the Ghost effect and Movement Speed. The item activates again when the user is near an enemy, slowing the near enemies down with a shockwave for 1.5 seconds.

This item’s mythic passive gives the other Legendary items 50 HP and 5 Ability Haste.

FAQs

Question: Which one is better, the Refillable Potion or the Health Potion?

Answer: It’ll depend on what do you prioritize, Gold or HP. They are not the same because the Refillable Potion saves you some Gold while the Health Potion gives you more HP.
